The Highlights: Balfour's independent living communities located next door
(the Lodge and the Residences at Balfour, which consist of 190 apartments
and townhomes), created a demand for larger assisted living floorplans
as residents aged and required more care. Architectural inspiration came
from the farms and homesteads of Boulder County, and this rustic yet
elegant feel is continued through the interior finishes. For the rustic, the
design speaks to the simple buildings and homes of Louisville's farmers,
miners, and early business owners-all experienced through a complete
gallery of historic Louisville photos in the Main Gallery. For the elegant,
roots of the quaint English architectural style speak to simple, symmetrical
proportions with local materials including rough-hewn wood and hand-cut
fieldstone. The result? One might question whether this new-build is in fact
a historic structure.

The Highlights: The design language of this club and spa references
the kinetic energy of the gym and the perpetually moving metropolis
beyond its walls. As a backdrop, the expansive two-floor space
connects via a staircase constructed from metal ribbons that
contort to form a balustrade. A 75-foot-long saltwater indoor pool
features a statement wall of individual concrete tiles working
together to form abstract patterns that mirror ripples in the water.
Hot-rolled steel surrounds the core wall, and a large-scale timber
herringbone is seen from each angle of the club, adding warmth to
the metropolitan, sleek space.

The Highlights: Designers had
to overcome the challenge of a
funky layout, with the residential
building's amenities located on
different floors or opposite sides.
To contend with these limitations,
heavy emphasis was placed on
strong, bold patterns in the
elevator lobbies and cabs to tie
spaces together. The solution took
some out-of-the-(elevator)-box
thinking. The team used lighting
techniques, designed 3D walls in
rich finishes, and mirrored the
floor design onto the ceiling to
create interest and break up the
long, narrow spaces.
