Clay Olympics Marks 20th Anniversary. For the
past 20 years, local high school students have
descended on Upton Hall's ceramics studio with
one goal: to win a series of messy-but-fun timed
ceramics-related events that compose the Western
New York Clay Olympics. About 30 students from
Kenmore East, Lewiston-Porter, and Pioneer high
schools-accompanied by art teachers who are alumni
of the college's ceramics and art education programs
-participated in this year's event on May 22, 2018.
Summer Music Institute Returns for Fifth Year.
Buffalo	State's	Music	Department	hosted	its	fifth	
consecutive Summer Music Institute for area middle
and high school students in July 2017. Rick
Fleming, professor of music and director of the
college's jazz and wind ensembles, founded the
institute in 2012 for students entering seventh
through	12th	grades	who	are	proficient	on	a	string,	
wind, or percussion instrument. The Jazz Camp
offers big band sessions, theory and arrangement
instruction, jazz improvisations, and combos. The
Classical Camp includes large ensemble rehearsals,
theory and aural perception instruction, and special
seminars in conducting, computer music, and
African drumming. Both camps culminate with a
public performance in the Performing Arts Center at
Rockwell Hall.
