DBS Manufacturing Inc. / HQ: Atlanta / Employees: 30 / Products: Custom industrial gear drives / Nil Young, owner: “We have an experienced workforce and a very open management style; everyone throughout the company is thinking about the product and takes pride in what they do.” In the Driver’s Seat clarifier drive production remains a major part of dbs manufacturing’s success after 35-plus years in business. by jim harris dbs says its work force remains focused on its products and takes pride in what they do. When Nil Young began his professional career, he expected to use his knowledge of mechanical engineering and design to build Formula One race cars. Young had the tools, the space, and the interest needed to build the cars. However, the national gas crisis of the late 1970s interrupted his plans, setting him on a different path. While looking for other mechanical engineering work, Young says he attended an engineeringrelated meeting at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was told to network with an Atlanta business owner. That meeting led to the start of his own company. 122 WINTER 2011 Young’s contact, a client of a wastewater treatment plant owner in Nashville, Tenn., helped him embark on a new career designing and building gear boxes for clarification units used in water treatment. While the clarifier boxes are on a much larger scale than car engines – requiring Young initially to borrow a crane for assembly – the transition wasn’t difficult. “It doesn’t make any difference whether you’re building gear boxes for race cars or wastewater treatment plants, it’s still engineering,” says Young, who established DBS Manufacturing Inc. in the 1970s and owns the company. Product Line The Atlanta-based company manufactures a full line of clarifier and thickener drive units, low-speed mechanical aerators, and rotary distributor center mechanisms. In addition to being used in water treatment, DBS’ products are also applied in the pulp and paper, mining, municipal, petrochemical, and power industries. “We are unique in that, at least in North America, we are the only independent manufacturer of clarifier center drives,” Young adds. DBS sells drive units to many OEMs who manufacture the entire clarifier or thickener and associated equipment.
