EVS Metal www.evsmetal.com / Revenue: $28 million / HQ: Riverdale, N.J. / Employees: 245 / Specialty: Contract precision sheet metal fabrication Joe Amico, vice president/owner: “Usually, you can draw a four-hour drive time circle around the facility, and that’s where we’re strongest.” Quick and Local evs metal’ s niche is quick turnaround of precision sheet metal parts produced just in time. by russ gager evs metal often helps its customers with their computer-aided design requirements. Not every job is suited for overseas production. Companies that make specialty products in short production runs sometimes need precision sheet metal parts quickly for data communication racks, electrical transformer enclosures or consumer electronics enclosures. “We do business pretty much all over the country,” says Vice President/Owner Joe Amico. The company has factories at its headquarters in Riverdale, N.J.; in Keene, N.H.; and Pflugerville, Texas, near Austin. “Usually you can draw a fourhour drive time circle around the facility, and that’s where we’re strongest,” he says. One reason for that four-hour circle is that it is the time limit for a round-trip delivery to a customer. “We do most all of our own trucking and delivery,” Amico notes. “When they need it the next day, it’s hard to be able to contract with a common carrier to get it there in time. “These are things that you really couldn’t offer well unless you’re in close proximity to the customer,” he points out. “If you need a shorter lead time, it’s difficult to put the part on a boat – that can take four weeks. Our advantage is all our customers are very lean, and a lot of times the engineer will want to come and see the first parts off the line.” Other parts the company is manufacturing and in some cases helping design are the racks that hold solar panels on roofs, control enclosures for metering electrical grids and solid-state amplifier chassis. “We can make anything out of metal that is not going to be huge quantities 128 manufacturing-today.com WINTER 2011 http://www.manufacturing-today.com
