The company’s customers are pharmaceutical companies looking for contract manufacturing of their penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotic products. Being a contract manufacturer often means accommodating the special needs of existing and potential customers. “For example, over the years we have designed our sterile powder filling line to accommodate a wide range of vial sizes, from 10 milliliters to 250 milliliters,” Plumpton points out. “We need to be flexible and always able to react quickly to additions or changes in our clients’ requirements while still maintaining the highest level of quality.” Non-penicillin Products It is that quality and flexibility that is attracting interest in the company for manufacturing of additional products. “We’ve seen a number of clients that are impressed with our ability to fill their penicillin products come to us with additional projects that are non-penicillin,” Plumpton relates. “So we are really developing this space to accommodate new and existing clients that have projects that require Hanford’s manufacturing expertise. “We are approaching it as a general manufacturing suite for both sterile and non-sterile products.” The new facility will accommodate small-scale manufacturing for product and process development up to full-scale commercial production. “Our strategy is to partner with clients that are willing to make the investment in the equipment necessary to manufacture their product,” Plumpton explains. “We have the space and the FDA regulatory, quality assurance, quality control, validation, testing and manufacturing expertise. hanford produces sterile injectable penicillin powders for the human and veterinary markets. Venturing Ahead with a background in venture capital, luke plumpton helps hanford develop new markets. by russ gager With its regular plant in Syracuse, N.Y., dedicated solely to production of penicillin as required by the FDA, Hanford Pharmaceuticals is looking to non-antibiotic products to fill the production space at its new 84,000square-foot manufacturing and laboratory support services facility. At the Syracuse plant, Hanford obtains active pharmaceutical ingredients from suppliers and combines them in unique formulations into vials, tablets or other dosage forms to 132 WINTER 2011 its customers’ specifications. It is the only U.S.-based independent contract antibiotic manufacturer. “Our core competency is beta-lactam antibiotic manufacturing with a specialty in sterile injectable powders,” explains Luke Plumpton, director of strategic planning. “We are also a major player in antibiotic mastitis treatments for the veterinary market.” Hanford Pharmaceuticals produces sterile injectable penicillin powders for human and veterinary
