Staying Hot having reached its 175 th anniversary, munroe has no plans to fade away. by staci davidson Frank Massaro has more than 30 years of manufacturing experience in the steel industry, and had been employed by a number of large, Fortune 500 firms in the past, but when a recruiter asked if he would be interested in working for a smaller company, he became excited about joining the team at Munroe Inc. “This is a strong company and I knew there was a lot I could add to the operation,” he explains. “I also knew I would have more control at Munroe than I had at past jobs with larger companies, and I would report directly to the president. All of that was attractive to me.” 98 WINTER 2011 So, Massaro came on board as the vice president of manufacturing in April of this year, the same year, in fact, that Munroe is celebrating its 175th anniversary. Although Massaro sees a number of areas where Munroe can improve, the company’s extensive history shows its foundation is firmly rooted in quality. “For any organization to exist for 175 years, they have to have the ability to make the products that their customers need,” he stresses. “Munroe is a quality producer of BOF hoods, power plant boilers and replacement parts, and I want to build on the strong base that is already here.” Complete Services Based in Pittsburgh, Munroe manufactures BOF (basic oxygen furnace) and EAF (electric-arc furnace) hoods for the steel industry and fabricates components for boilers in various applications, including superheaters, reheaters, economizers, membrane wall panels and heat exchangers. Because of its products’ durability and solid construction, Munroe also serves clients in the power generation, petrochemical, pulp/paper and water industries. Massaro explains the company benefits from “quite a bit of repeat business,” which is important during slow market conditions. “In the power industry, we work with many coal-fired power plants, and help them with repair and maintenance work,” he says. “Power plant customers utilize large boilers to produce steam – typically plants have
