CAWG Foundation Awards $31,500 in
Student Scholarships
The CAWG Foundation has awarded $31,500 in college
scholarships to eight students. The scholarships are awarded
annually to students whose parent or legal guardian is employed
by a California winegrape grower. Funds are raised through the
generous donations of members of CAWG and the California
wine community. We extend our gratitude for all those who
support this program!
The July issue of The Crush will feature more information about

Program Committee Co-Chairs Selected
Nichola Hall and R. Keith
Striegler have been named cochairs for the 2020 Unified Wine
& Grape Symposium Program
Development Committee.
Hall is a staff scientist at Scott
Laboratories and Striegler is a grower outreach specialist at E. &
J. Gallo Winery. They lead a group of nearly 30 wine and grape
industry representatives on the committee, which held its first
meeting on May 17. Next year's Unified will be Feb. 4-6 at Cal
Expo, a temporary host site due to renovations at the Sacramento
Convention Center.

Leadership Transition at DPR
Teresa Marks, who in January became the Department of
Pesticide Regulation's (DPR) acting director when Brian Leahy
resigned, retired at the end of May. Before taking over that
role, she had been DPR's chief deputy director since 2016 and
has decades of public service in California and Arkansas. Val
Dolcini was pegged to serve as acting director of DPR, beginning
June 3, until a permanent replacement is appointed. Dolcini
was appointed in March by Gov. Newsom as CalEPA deputy
secretary for agriculture. He was an administrator for USDA's
Farm Service Agency from 2014 to 2017 and state executive
director for California from 2009 to 2014. He also served in agrelated roles in the administration of former Gov. Gray Davis.

U.S. Sustainable Winegrowing Summit
The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and regional
winery and vineyard associations hosted a summit on the
value of sustainability education and communications, June
6-7 in Sonoma County. Attendees learned about some of the
driving forces behind consumers' and wine buyers' increasing
interest in sustainable winegrowing. They also heard from
programs around the country that have embraced sustainability
and the resulting benefits for growers and vintners. CAWG
President John Aguirre moderated one of the panels - "Value of
Sustainability: Perspectives from Growers and Vintners."
