Phyllis Ripley, my first
nursing instructor, who
taught me that questioning
brings growth; for helping
me understand, "Water
seeks its own level," which
meant I would determine
my level of success and
ability; and for her devotion
to helping a young woman
stand taller, speak louder
and without apology address
the issue at hand.

who raised 16 children, but
never her voice. My father,
who worked hard, loved
life and taught me what
matters most are the people
in your life. My mother, who
has exemplified courage,
strength and resilience.
