through meetings, email, informal
communication and readily available
digital access to updated policies. All
clinical protocols and protocol changes
are physician-driven. For example, if a
patient presents and the intake team
determines the patient does not meet
criteria for admission, a physician must
also evaluate him or her.

Identifying at-risk youth
Suicide clusters and suicide contagion
are real phenomenon, and the psychological and social impacts of suicides on
a community can be heart wrenching
and devastating. Unfortunately, little
is known about effective preventive
measures. Recently, more energy is being focused on school-based prevention
programs geared toward identifying

at-risk students. This is important
because research suggests many suicidal youth never receive mental health
treatment or tell an adult about their
depression or suicidal thoughts.
Other prevention strategies include
identifying those who are most susceptible to contagion after a suicide,
such as close friends of the victim,
those who have previously attempted
suicide, and those who are known to
have psychiatric problems. After a
suicide, it's important to decrease the
emotional distress of those affected
because inappropriate interventions
after a suicide may increase the risk of
suicidal thoughts in others.
At UF Shands, while the hope is
suicide clusters diminish in frequency
and reach, the organization's goal is

to be prepared for their recurrence
and to prevent as many injuries and
deaths as possible. Due to the nature
of adolescent suicide clusters, collaboration among many individuals, fields
and specialties is necessary and worth
the efforts.
