Encourage a focus on kids
Health care debates have centered almost entirely on adults.

N

ational health care debates
always focus on the needs
of adults: their coverage, benefits
and how to pay for them. The
Affordable Care Act expanded
Medicaid to provide health care
for 20 million uninsured adults,
and recently, the American
Health Care Act focused on
Medicaid and adult needs with
virtually no mention of children.
Yet 30 million kids receive
health care through Medicaid,
and neither Congress nor the
administration discusses this.
As the national voice representing children's hospitals on Capitol Hill, we
should all be alarmed that large-scale policy
debates continue without considering the
needs of half of the country's children.
Where are kids in these discussions? Do
Congress and the White House view safeguarding kids' health care as a priority? The
reality is 90 percent of federal spending on
health care is for adult programs, adults
outnumber kids 3-to-1, and kids can't vote.
As the partisan debate about health care
for adults continues, the risk of collateral
damage to children is high and unrecognized. Our nation's leaders should protect
children and look after their health care
and their futures. Today's decisions will
affect our children for a lifetime.
As the nation's children's hospitals, serving millions of children and families, we
must all call on Congress and the White
House to make children a bipartisan priority. Our strategies to safeguard children in
health care reform discussions include:
 CHA, children's hospitals and
hospital advisory teams lobbying
congressional representatives and
committee staff members

 Support and leadership of coalitions
such as the Partnership for Medicaid
 Engaging the broader hospital industry
to focus on Medicaid and children
You can partner with CHA to defend the
risks to children's health. Here's how:
 Stay connected with national advocacy
efforts: childrenshospitals.org/
washingtonupdate
 Support your hospital's government
relations team
 Contact your representatives:

 Join Speak Now for Kids, a grassroots
network of child health advocates at

Thank you for your continued outreach,
advocacy and support.
