Children's Hospitals Today - Summer 2017 - 2

CHECKING IN EDITORʼS NOTE

Leading by example
Others see that you are really good at what you do.

I

recently had the chance to get out of the
office and connect with my peers at the
Association Media and Publishing Annual
Meeting. Editors, writers and designers from
a variety of associations gathered for two
days to talk shop. Along with staffers from
the World Wildlife Fund, the Association
for Convenience and Fuel Retailing and the
National Association of REALTORS, to name
a few, I was proud to represent the Children's
Hospital Association. And yes, there is an
association for everything, including for
people who do what I do.
On the last day, I attended a session led by
the editor-in-chief of Chemical & Engineering
News, the weekly print magazine of the
American Chemical Society. I thought, "Dang,
I could learn a lot from this person." I was
impressed by her scope of work: managing
a team of 50 editors and writers who send a
publication to press every week. By comparison, Children's Hospitals Today has a full-time
staff of one and very gracious colleagues who
lend their expertise and time to help get this
magazine out the door every 12 weeks.
Later, as I browsed a table filled with association magazines, I noticed the copies
of CHT I put on display that morning had
already been snatched up. It was then I
realized we have something to offer other

associations, and they could earn something from us. Even though CHT is small
by Chemical & Engineering News standards,
it's mighty-carrying the powerful stories
of the people and places working to provide
the best care to kids across the country. And
after looking at so many other association
publications, I can also say CHT is pretty effective at executing on that mission.
The same can be said of the nation's children's hospitals and the work you do every
day. With roughly 220 member organizations, CHA is not the largest health care association. But that size doesn't mean children's
hospitals aren't leaders in the health care
industry. The pediatric world is innovating
in ways that benefit patients of all ages-and
the adult hospital industry is taking notice
(see "Follow the leader" on page 18).
So continue doing your best work every
day. Know that your peers across the health
care industry-and beyond-are watching,
and they are learning from your successes.
