First-ever patented prone cart for kids makes exploring
the hospital or wheeling to therapies a breeze.

T

ooling down the Gillette skyway,
4-year-old Brock Sandahl will tell
you about how he learned to drive a
wheelchair (YouTube), how much he
loves preschool (a lot!) and why six is
afraid of seven (because seven ate nine).
Brock came to Gillette Children's
Specialty Healthcare in October 2016
for selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery,

a procedure that permanently reduces
muscle tightness caused by cerebral
palsy. After surgery, children like
Brock undergo six weeks of inpatient
rehabilitation therapy. They spend
several weeks using a prone cart when
they're not in therapy sessions. Lying
flat on the stomach contributes to good
surgical outcomes. Patients transition

COTTON TIP APPLICATOR INJURIES

Used for household cleaning, crafts and
applying cosmetics, cotton tip applicators
are causing injuries to children. From 1990
to 2010, about 263,000 children under
the age of 18 were treated in emergency
departments for cotton tip applicatorrelated ear injuries-that's about 12,500
annually, or 34 every day. Read more at

to a stander or wheelchair once they've
built up strength, but continue to use
the prone cart regularly.
The cart at Gillette has extra benefits. The device, which the United
States Patent and Trademark Office
just patented, was designed by a team
of Gillette rehabilitation therapists
who envisioned and created a cart just
for kids. With expandable length and
an adjustable handle, the new carts
make exploring the hospital or wheeling to therapies easy.
"The cart stretches the hip muscles
and strengthens the core and upper
body, all while on a comfortable, mobile
surface," says Angela Sinner, D.O., pediatric rehabilitation medicine physician.
"Our cart's custom design builds kids'
tolerance of the position."
After surgery, Brock's family noticed
an immediate difference in his muscle
tightness. Brock has returned home,
where he still spends some of his time
lying on his stomach, and he continues
outpatient therapies. From greater
mobility and strength, to a lesser risk
of falling and better sleep, Brock's
mom, Mandy, says his surgery was lifechanging. "Brock is unstoppable."
