The case for prioritizing children

They will be driving the economy and leaders of companies and communities.

I

n one to two generations, today's children will be in the
workforce, paying taxes and supporting Medicare and
Social Security. Children will also become drivers of the economy, leaders of companies and communities and protectors
of America's interests at home and abroad. Their ability to
thrive, cope, create, cooperate and lead is a matter of national
security and prosperity. So how are today's kids faring?
The Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative
tracks national child and family well-being. It finds half of
children meet basic criteria to be considered flourishing.
Nearly half of all U.S. children ages 0 to 17 have at least one
of nine adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which have
demonstrable affects on early brain and social development
and subsequent adult health.
Without a change in this trajectory, child health could see
a continued decline, affecting the mental, emotional and
physical prospects of children moving into adulthood. This
outcome is not lost on adult
workers. According to a C.S.

National Poll on Children's
Health supported by CHA,
more than half of adults surveyed say kids today have worse
mental or emotional health. And four in 10 adults believe
children's physical health is worse compared to when they
were growing up. Across all age groups, children's health is

viewed as unlikely to meet the goals of the American dream
of continuous improvement.
Investment in kids' attainment of the American dream is
waning. In 2016, 10 percent of the federal budget was spent on
kids. Under current law, kids' share of the budget is projected
to drop to 7.5 percent over the next decade. With federal
legislative proposals to cap Medicaid and decrease funding for
other children's programs under discussion in Congress, the
proportion of spending on children could plummet.

of children are residing in states
with lower investment in kids.
These states are producing a disproportionate share of the
future workforce. Given 40 percent of U.S.-born adults are
joining the workforce in a state different than where they
were born and received early health care and education, the
interdependence of states relative to public policies affecting
children is more important than ever.
Helping every child lead a healthy and educated life
benefits society. Together, families and the organizations
that support them, including the nation's children's hospitals,
must champion children as a priority to those who have the
power to promote lasting change.

HARM FROM RETAINED
FOREIGN OBJECTS

Surgical and other invasive
procedures for pediatric
patients are complex for a
variety of reasons. Adding
to that complexity is the
risk of retained surgical
items that aren't included
in the standardized count
process. Child Health PSO
identified this safety concern

after conducting a common
cause analysis of the Child
Health PSO database. You
can prevent similar harm
from occurring in your
