that setting. If you’re in an area where there aren’t many fun matches,
try to recreate the problem in a training situation. Create more speed into
the poles by putting a tunnel or jump just before the weave entrance. If
the dog has a problem with this, work on training stride collection. I
like to use a clicker initially to teach collection. Start by using a toy
or cookie to force collection just before the ﬁrst weave pole and click
for it. Then increase the distance you send the dog to the poles. Once he
is collecting for the poles, add a tunnel or jump 6’ to 12’ before the
weaves depending on the size of the dog’s stride to create speed going
into the poles. Sometimes I put a cue with it like Easy that can be used
to cue stride collection. You can give the verbal cue once the dog
understands it two or three strides before the poles. If none of this
works then it may be stress that is causing the dog to miss the poles in
trials. The weaves can be a major point of stress for many dogs since it
is a very complex obstacle. I don’t allow corrections in the poles. I do
a lot of rewarding for proper behavior and if I ﬁnd it’s a stress
point, I have the dog perform the weave poles for his breakfast/dinner.
This helps him to associate the poles with something really good and seems
to help a lot of dogs with problem obstacles. It can also help with speed,

the handler can rev up the dog in practice to simulate a trial’s level of
energy, the easier it is to work through the problem. Getting a chance to
practice the weaves at a variety of locations like fun matches or parks
and other places unfamiliar to the dog also helps greatly. In addition to
adding distractions, I also made the weaves more challenging in practice
by approaching at difficult angles, crossing behind the dog while she was
in the weaves, running past the entry as she entered the poles, standing
still and sending her through the obstacle ahead of me, recalling the dog
to me through the weaves, and so on. I did anything that might challenge
the dog’s understanding of the obstacle in the relatively sedate
conditions of practice. F o r my dog, the big problem in competition was
running past the poles completely. When I could get her so revved up in
practice that I thought she might miss her entry, I’d click and reward
her for running toward the weaves. I’d run out, treat her, and then
continue with the weaves. After enough repetitions, she came to anticipate
the reward just before the weaves and would slow down enough to actually
hit the entry. Even when she was as excited as at a trial, the
anticipation of a treat just before the weaves caused her to think more
about her entry. T h e key to getting around this problem is to work hard
at duplicating in practice the excitement and distractions that the dog
