pts; 63.00 sec run. Super-Qs are based on the number of dogs that actually
compete in the class and are taken from the top 15% of the Qs. Classes
with fewer than ﬁve dogs can be combined if necessary, with the 12 and
16 running together, and the 22 and 26 running together as necessary. L o
o k i n g at this Advanced/PII Snooker course you can ﬁnd most, if not
all, of the required information from the course copy. For instance, you
learn but don’t actually need to know that this is a modified Snooker
course. Next you see you are required to do three of the four reds. Then
you read that all combinations there are two are bidirectional only in the
opening, which means that you must take them in the direction of ﬂow for
your closing sequence. Last you see the times for the different heights.
The course map as shown allows you to plan your own course based on your
team’s abilities. What I have not written and will be sure to write on
any future courses to avoid confusion is that it is or is not acceptable
for ambitious teams or those with very fast dogs to attempt all four of
the reds, earning the most possible points. I covered this in my January
07 | Clean Run judge’s brieﬁng, but I recently attended a briefing for
Advanced Snooker where this information was neither covered nor worded in a
way that made exhibitors including me and another USDAA judge question what
the judge wanted. Be sure to attend the brieﬁng and ask all the questions
you need answered. That’s what we’re there for as judges. On this
course teams are allowed to do all four reds, but are not required to do
so. . This means that teams could potentially earn 32 points in the
opening 1-7-1-7-17-1-7 . After the opening, teams go into the mini
“course” or closing sequence which begins with #2 and ends with #7b.
Teams that complete the entire course within standard course time and earn
a total of 37 points will qualify, earning an Advanced Snooker Q. If you do
the math, the closing sequence is worth 27 points. This means that to
qualify a team must earn a minimum of 10 points in the opening. Teams that
want to win opt for higher points in the opening or perhaps avoid the
weaves by earning enough points in the opening to not need them in the
closing! For instance, teams that did a #1 followed by the #5 combination
three times in the opening earned 18 points. To qualify, these teams
needed to only make it through #6 in the closing. A team with weak weave
poles could still earn a Q by making up the difference in the opening
strategy. The maximum any team could earn on this course was 59 points.
The highest score actually earned was 50 points by a 22 BC. Since this was
Advanced and Super-Qs weren’t a factor, most teams didn’t risk their Q
for the win. This Snooker course turned out to be fast, fun, and
well-received. Many teams chose to do the #6a-b tunnel combination at
least twice in the opening. It was by far the most popular choice, closely
followed by the single #5 tunnel. Many teams started with the far right #1
and worked their way around clockwise so that they finished near the
beginning of the closing sequence. Several teams did the teeter or tire as
the last opening obstacle while several did the higher pointed #7a-b
combination, leaving them in an excellent starting position. In the
closing the most common downfall was an off-course from #4 to #5, an
off-course back into the tunnel after #6b, or just taking the wrong
