will be tempted to do a front cross before jump #3. How does this aﬀect
the obstacle discrimination? A tight turn over jump #3 might line up the
dog for the oﬀ-course tunnel red line . Does letting the dog make a
wider turn at #3 actually set the dog’s line for the A-frame orange line
? 3 1 This sequence should be run without a lead-out. An extra stride or
two might be needed to set up the dog for jump #3. Ask handlers if they
prefer a front or rear cross from jump #3 to the #4 tire. Why? Then which
way will they turn from #4 to #5? Each team may have a diﬀerent opinion.
No one is wrong! 4 This extension of the exercise in Advanced Focus Station
3 will make handlers think a bit more about the ending. Having the dog on
the handler’s right is deﬁnitely more eﬃcient and safer when turning
to the chute opening. A front cross before the chute can put handlers in a
great position to ﬁnish the last two jumps. To get into this position,
handlers must set up back at the #2-#3-#4 sequence. If needed, review each
team’s technique through the jumps at the previous focus station. 4 3

is deceptively easy and could readily lead to some oﬀ-courses. Take care
to enter the correct #6 tunnel opening while bypassing the incorrect
opening. Upon exiting, remind handlers to watch out for the dogwalk and
table as possible problem areas on the way to #7. 3 Handlers will want to
work the A-frame with their dogs on their left to help with the #5 weave
entry. A rear cross to put the dog on the left, either before or after #2,
could cause a problem with the obstacle discrimination and pull dogs into
the oﬀ-course tunnel. 4 The #2-#3-#4 serpentine in this sequence can be
a little tricky. Ask handlers to drive their dogs forward an extra stride
or two and then turn them to jump #3 by using a front cross. This maneuver
makes a nice line from #4 to #5. Could a rear cross accomplish this same
