in synch with each other. Again, this is not a conscious eﬀort, it is biorhythms, a naturally occurring phenomenon. After much discussion on this subject at a recent seminar, Ann Stocum took her two dogs, Breeze (AKC/USA World Team Sheltie) and Tai (young Border Collie) to the soccer field down the road one evening. She put them in a sit-stay, led out a long way across the field, and recalled her dogs of very diﬀerent sizes; they, too, ran right in synch with one another. So, what does all this have to do with how well your dog can keep the jump bars up? Everything! Our dogs crave that sense of cadence and rhythm while running with us. How we as handlers go about getting there can be a complicated process; we need to move more smoothly with our dogs and we need to not over-vocalize (speak only as needed). For myself, I have found performance coaches who can teach me how to produce better

and more eﬃcient motion to be of great help. Agility exercises such as the ones oﬀered in my DVD Proo ng Jump work with Motion are very helpful in isolating handler movement and its eﬀect on your dog’s jumping, while slowing down and speeding up the process until the movement is cleanly communicated and smoothly executed by both dog and handler. Clearly, there are many paths that can lead you to a successful outcome, but first you must be willing to understand the desires of our canine teammates and then formulate a plan that can take you there. As I stated in the beginning of this article, this topic has fascinated and intrigued me for a very long time, both with horses and with dogs. Years ago I truly doubted that you could have the same sense of “feel” you have while riding a horse when running your dog. This is one of those times I can happily say I was wrong. It is the same, just a bit diﬀerent. D
