back. We don’t do that. Our coaches work with the parents and the child. Once the child calms down, he is welcome to come back and participate. We understand and accept, but at no time are the children allowed to lash out at the dog. Jen: Do you match dogs and kids? Kim: Yes, we do. We interview each student and he or she does a test run with the dog we match them with. That tells me where they are and what kind of dog that they need. Initially, I thought the dogs all needed to be very sweet. I was wrong. The dogs need to want to work and be pushed. My dog Ice, started working in the program with ﬁve different kids. She worked with each kid differently.

Jen: Do the kids compete? Kim: Currently we hold competitions at our facility. We have had used ribbons donated and we replace the center strip with “Agility Angels Qualiﬁer.” We have titles now that the kids can earn. Our kids also compete in local CPE competitions and do very well. Banda’s CPE trial has medallions for each of the kids for running and they get presented to them as they come out of the ring. Jen: What do you see as the future for Agility Angels? Kim: I would love to get a larger facility and then we could work with more kids than we currently do. We are limited right now by time and space. In addition,

what I would really like is for other areas to pick up this type of programs. Getting more kids involved would open the door for them to compete across regions. Jen: Well Kim, thanks so much for spending some time with me to share your passion for Agility Angels. In my mind you, the dogs, and all your volunteers are angels themselves. D

Jen, actively competitive in agility for over 17 years, has put 8 ADCHs and several MACHs on her Border Collies, Jack Russells, mix breed, and Sheltie as well as being a three-time AKC World Team Member with BC Static. Jen is currently competing with her mix breed Taser, Border Collie Guilty, and her Sheltie Britain. Jen and Taser are the 16” 2011 National Steeplechase Champions. Jen was also on the podium with her Sheltie Britain, taking 3rd. She repeated the dual placements in the 2011 Grand Prix Finals, taking 2nd with Taser and 3rd with Britain. In addition to her skills as a competitor, Jen’s excellent teaching ability and ability to adapt to different styles of dogs makes her a highly sought after presenter/instructor across the country. Jen and her husband Bill reside in Lapeer, Michigan where she teaches for FiredUp K9s and Highest Hope Dog Sports. She also conducts seminars and workshops around the country.
