AGILITY MOVES: Get Ready to Rumble!

I imagine most of you have heard the sayings, "It's where the rubber meets the road," "It's show time," and maybe even "Let's get
ready to rumble!" These sayings, along with many others, are the
epitome of what I'd like to get across to you athletes in this article.
Functional fitness applied to specific agility moves is not only
fun, but also a necessity if one plans on excelling and staying
healthy in the sport. I hope the word "athlete," when mentioned in above, empowered you. After having the pleasure of
training some of your sport's competitors, I not only gained
insight into the world of agility training, but also the utmost
respect. Each of you is as much of an athlete as I am. I noticed
that you need many of the same skills I did when playing as a
running back and defensive back at a very high level in football.
AGILITY TECHNIQUE: FRONT CROSS
Function: Mobility of the Thoracic Spine
This agility movement truly reminded me of a delicate but very
precise dance move. There's this beautiful moment when the
power being generated by one's legs is asked to downshift a
gear and allow for the upper torso to become a well-oiled and
precisely interacting unit.

This technique, from a functional fitness standpoint, is reliant
upon the mobility of the thoracic spine. Unfortunately with the
amount of sitting that tends to happen in our daily lives, spinal
mobility is one of the first things to start to decrease. Fortunately there are many things we can do to stave off the process
as well as reverse some of the mobility that has been lost.
Functional Exercise: Rib Grab
This functional exercise is one that most of you will be able to
do well and see improvement while performing the front cross.
It's called a "rib grab."
Lie flat on your back, with knees bent and feet flat on the floor;
position arms outstretched, with palms facing up, just below
chest level. Take the left hand, reach across the torso, and gently
grab your ribs just underneath the breast bone; slowly pull back
toward that hand's point of origin until that hand has reached
its original position by your side.
Repeat with right hand and make a mental note about which
side seems a harder to complete. After determining which side
presented more difficulty, repeat the rib grab on that side.
