Should I Stay or Should I Go?
I first thought of "stay" as a concept
many years ago when I hosted animal
trainer, Ann Head, to give a lecture at my
school. She trained animals of all kinds
for TV and the movies. Beyond being impressed with all the behaviors she could
teach, I was fascinated with the level of
comprehension of the behaviors she
achieved with the animals, even rats.
Her dogs understood stay on a whole
different level than mine. She could
place a dog's paw on and object and it
would "stay," tell them to tilt their heads
and "stay," have them keep their butts
up in the air and "stay," keep their chin
down on the ground while they rolled

their eyeballs up (very cute indeed) and
hold a "stay." Stay was more like "freeze,"
and they could "freeze" in any position
they had been taught to do. Ann was
not just getting them to stay; those animals understood the concept of "stay."
I noticed that the "level" of the stay I got
from my dogs was sometimes situational. I began to teach my dogs to stay
with different parts of their bodies as
Ann did. The teaching did wonders for
all aspects of their stays. I paid particular attention to their feet and I taught
them how to push into the ground/
floor with their front legs. I also stopped
using the command "stay" in casual circumstances because I had re-defined

my criteria. I used a "wait there" command when I meant "you can sit, stand,
lay down, scratch, or chew bones-just
don't leave" when I needed them to
wait on top of a crate while I was teaching or on a mat while I was eating. "Wait
there" is another concept that comes in
handy when the dog can generalize it.
When your goal in training is to teach a
concept so that your dog can generalize in many situations, you will get inspired to be clearer with all your criteria.
A dog that will stay but does not understand the concept:
* will not look confident while he is on a
stay; he may seem worried.
* will often move his feet (a telltale sign of
confusion and nerves).
* will perform the stay better in some
situations than others (start line is stronger than the contacts or table on some
days, then it switches around).
* is stronger in certain positions than others (sit is often stronger than stand, for
example).
