Whether You're
Competitive

Unless you're a professional athlete, competitiveness has become
politically incorrect. In our t-ball
world, where everyone gets a trophy, being competitive is abhorrent. In some circles, being competitive is synonymous with narcissism. And don't get me started
on social media, where the slightest hint of competitiveness can
get you a virtual tongue lashing.
In agility, we are told it's all about
our dogs having fun. I bet you've
heard, "the dogs don't care about
ribbons" or "he/she just needs a
job."
But, if you're reading this, I bet
you're competitive even if you may
not want to admit it. Let's be honest; the dogs don't care about competition at all, you do. Your dog has
fun at the park, at the beach, the
lake, on a jog, etc. Heck, one of my

dogs has fun chasing her own tail
or biting at the stream of water from
the hose while I'm watering the garden. None of the activities on this
list, and it's an abbreviated list, cost
anywhere near what we spend on
agility in time or money. And, for the
cost of one weekend's entry fee,
you could pay for a lot of class time,
if it was really just about your dog.
"They" say the first step to a cure
is admitting you have a problem.
With that in mind, I have created a
little test that should put your mind
at ease and let you admit: Yes, I am
competitive.
I think I know a couple of people
who can hit the maximum score.
Personally, I hit a solid 84 points.
Let's see how you do:
1. Do you read an agility magazine or online articles? (trick
question, just add 1 point)
2. Have you listened to a podcast
about agility? (add 1 point)
3. Do you attend agility classes
or seminars? (add 2 points)
4. The amount of money spent
on agility classes, seminars,
and entry fees per month
is more than your car payment. (add 5 points)
5. Speaking of cars (usually
our second largest expenditure), did your last vehicle
purchase revolve around
requirements for your dogs
and agility equipment? (add 10
points)
6. Did you bring a tape measure to
the car dealership to make sure
your equipment fit? (add 5 more
points)
