great exercise for indoor training is working on toy drive. I spend
several minutes each day doing this with my puppy. I take out about three
or four of his favorite toys, work on tugging games with him, and then I
go to a lower-value toy and expect him to play with that one as well. I
always end the game when he is very excited and motivated by the toy. If
you do any kind of balance work with your dog, it can be done very well
indoors. I spend a few minutes every other day working on either a stool
or a balance ball to give my dog good conditioning exercise. You can also
work on a Buja board since it doesn’t take up much room. My Buja board
is 3’ x 3’ and has a 3” hole in the center. I use a soccer ball
under the hole and my dog can run back and forth to work his nose touch,
or my puppy can get exposure to the board’s banging. 2 MACHs Anya & Miko

lots of practice here in Wisconsin trying to ﬁgure out what to do when
it’s 10° below outside and the agility equipment is frozen to the
ground. As important as training on equipment is, I believe relationship
building, learning new skills, and physical conditioning are much more
important. Winter is a great time to focus on those areas since you can do
most of it in the comfort of your own home in front of the television. A
list of my favorite things to work on during the long winter months:
Rear-end strengthening: Many dogs can beneﬁt from developing stronger
rear-end muscles. Strong rear-end muscles allow your dog to have more
power pushing off to jump and make controlled descents on A-frames easier.
Several fun things you can do to work on this include: 1. Teach your dog to
squat into a beg position sitting on rear, back straight, raising front
paws up . 2. During tug play raise the dog’s front paws off the ground.
3. Using a step, place the dog into a two-on/two-off position and have him
rock back onto his haunches without sitting; work on increasing the time he
can hold it. This exercise is isometric; the muscles are contracting
without movement, which is great for dogs with hip problems. 4. And my
favorite TV lounge exercise: I make my dogs leap vertically for a treat;
you would be amazed how high my Corgis can leap for popcorn! The living
room carpet provides a nice soft landing and I don’t allow twisting with
