With each dog there is a “moment” where leadership is established,
where a dog figures out you are both leader and protector. Our moment came
two days after getting Quick, when a friend visited. Quick was on-lead but
leaping about and being crazy. I gently and quietly told her Down and
pushed on her shoulders. She turned on me snarling and snapping. Although
I don’t use punishment often, this behavior warranted it. I wanted it to
be clear and strong enough to stop the behavior and prevent future
problems. My thoughts were twofold: what have I gotten myself into and
this must be the reason she was given away twice! But whatever was in her
mind was resolved then and there, and she has never done anything like
that again. I enjoy older pups because we can get right into the meat of
agility. For my dogs and me, agility is about fun, play, toys, and
treats—not work. Agility training encompasses all aspects of
self-control. It is important that my dogs react eagerly to my softly
spoken commands. From the first, I teach that if I have to ask twice or
raise my voice, I will physically come and help her do what I ask.
Quick’s early lessons included daily hand-feeding with the clicker for
sit, down, eye contact, come, turn, go around, send, and agility
obstacles—all without a leash. We worked daily on using self-control,
not physical barriers, to keep her in her crate, ex-pen, car, and behind
gates. To exit, she must offer a sit and look at me and wait for release.
I would pleasantly tell her to wait and leave the crate or ex-pen door
open while I prepared a meal, tossed toys, or worked another dog. If she
stepped out without release, I put her back immediately with a “No.”
You should be able to drop a piece of food outside an open crate and,
without a verbal reminder, the dog should stay until released. I leave the
gate open as I take another dog out and, without words, I expect my dogs to
restrain themselves at the gate. Reward heavily during training. Practicing
these exercises will reward your team in performance and are worth the
effort. Try this: drop 10 pieces of food about 24 apart. First, with the
dog on lead, walk over the food without touching it. Expect eye contact.
Reward. Do a down next to a piece, then allow him to eat only one. Call
cheerfully away and do a new behavior, allowing him to get one more piece.
