sequence of #9-#13 was pretty straightforward with the exception of a
couple of dogs that took the tunnel under the A-frame at #10 because the
handlers were late with direction. At jump #13 handlers needed to cross
again to set up for the weaves and tire. I prefer a front cross on the
takeoff side of jump #13, as shown in Figure 3. The handlers who could
send the dog from the tunnel to jump #12 could get into better position
for the front cross and the dog could make a much tighter turn at the
jump. Those that were able to have their dog weave at a distance and then
send the dog to the tire at #15 gave themselves much more time to get into
position for a front cross at #16. The best place to be was deep in the
pocket on the landing side of #16 so that the dogs had a good line to the
#17 weaves as seen in Figure 4. Some handlers tried a rear cross at the
weaves and this did not run well. Then came the serpentine ﬁnish: many
handlers rushed to get on the landing side of jump #18 to do a front cross
to get #19 and #20, but it took a lot of running to get ahead of the dog.
This maneuver really was unnecessary and caused time delays for some. The
smoothest way to handle this serpentine was to stay on the weave pole side
of the jumps and basically run a straight line to the ﬁnish as in Figure
4. There were quite a few people who handled it that way and it ran very
smoothly with no wide turns at either #18 or #19, saving We need Judge’s

information. The handler sends the dog out to jump #12 while getting ready
to do a front cross in front of jump #13. This causes the dog to wrap the
jump and make a tight turn to #13. If handlers did a front cross deep in
the pocket after jump #16, they lined the dog up nicely for the weaves. If
they stayed on the weave side of the jumps, they had a very smooth line out

3 4 them some time. A rear cross at #20 ended the run with a smooth
ﬁnish. The Q-rate for this course was just over 50%. The Jackpot Course
Jackpot is the CPE name for the game of Gamblers. For this class, a judge
can design a traditional gamble similar to those seen in other
associations, or he can decide to do a “non-traditional” jackpot as I
did for this trial. The course shown in Figure 5 has three gambles in it.
Each gamble could be taken once for gamble points and once for obstacle
points. To qualify, competitors needed to get enough points for the
appropriate level, complete at least one of the gambles, and get to the
table to stop the clock. A fraction of a second over time and they would
receive lots of points, but an NQ. Missing a Clean Run can be painful.
