postage. Now, for the ill-prepared, we have all been there. We didn’t
think we were not prepared when we left home for the trial, but it just
seemed to turn out to be that way. You walk a course and there is a
sequence that is beyond your team at this point. It is really difﬁcult
to be decisive at this point. Human nature is telling you to worry about
this upcoming challenge and a bit of trepidation sets in. My suggestion is
to work the problem. All you can do is to perform with what you have
brought with you. You are not going to manufacture anything new at this
point, but you must be careful not to let the concern over one challenge
cause your performance on others to deteriorate. Stay strong in your
attitude about what you can do just as I suggested for the new handler
earlier. Are You Being Overly Cautious? When the weather is bad we
exercise caution. When we have to move around in the dark, we are
cautious. If we have to make a big decision we are taught by our mentors
to use caution. Normally caution is a good thing but too much of it can
paralyze a handler in the agility ring. There is a ﬁne line between
indecision and caution. A slight hesitation on your part may lead to your
canine partner becoming confused, and your run is spoiled. To avoid excess
caution you might ﬁnd that rehearsing your run several times in your mind
before the run should help. Oh, you do that already! Good for you. So if
that is a good idea then why not rehearse that you are decisive when
entering the ring, that you stay decisive and sure of yourself during the
run? It will aid you greatly in avoiding the pitfall of being too
cautious. Remember, your agility partner needs you to be just as decisive
in competition as you are in training. If your attitude changes at trials,
your dog will surely pick it up. Be decisive. Decisiveness is one
characteristic that you rarely see lacking in successful agility handlers.
