ride together. She’s in the lead and pulls me down the street with a crazy smile on her face. We love to go fast. LK: Is there any advice you can give another person, young or old about training a JRT? SNAPSHOT AL: Have fun and don’t let your dogs start bad habits, because, if they do, they will never quit doing it, no matter how hard you try to stop them. Always reward every good thing with a click and a treat. Don’t lose your patience and train frequently. Keep your dog close to you in all of your daily activities. Misty is with me every moment of the day and night when I’m not at school. Misty knows it’s her job and duty to watch over me. LK: What got you interested in agility? AL: I saw my Mom do it from a very young age and I wanted to do what Mommy did back then, but as I grew older, I saw how much fun it was and how much bonding and teamwork it required. It just seemed to grab me and say, “This would be fun!” LK: If you got another dog, would it be a JRT? AL: No, Misty is a very special pup and when she dies, I don’t think any other JRT could fill such big shoes, never. LK: What have you learned in agility that has helped you in your daily activities at home and school? “…agility has shown me the dedication you need to finish your goals in life, and it has also shown me the teamwork that is required to finish everyday jobs. And to keep working hard at any thing you try.” AL: Wow, what a big question with too few words in the world to describe it. Well, agility has shown me the dedication you need to finish your goals in life, and it has also shown me the teamwork that is required to finish everyday jobs. And to keep working hard at any thing you try. LK: Do you have any goals in agility that you wish to accomplish? How do you feel about competing with much older and experienced handlers? Handler: Annie Lehman Home: Plano, Texas Occupation: 7th-grade student Training Affiliation: Dallas Dog Sports Dogs: ADCH Misty, four-year-old Jack Russell Terrier Favorite show or venue: USDAA Most memorable moment: Receiving my ADCH at age 11 Most forgettable moment: At the Regional (2007) Misty and I were having an awesome run in the Finals and having the fastest time until my mind went blank at the very end and I sent her over the wrong jump. Favorite obstacles to train: Teeter and dogwalk Way to avoid nerves: I don’t exactly get them when running. I’m just there to play and have fun with Misty. Advice for other handlers: It’s just a game—your dog doesn’t care if you place or qualify, and the dog doesn’t care about the ribbon. Your dog just cares about having fun with you. So go out on the course and have fun! AL: Misty has recently achieved her ADCH and she is 4 and I’m 13. Dog agility doesn’t end there; there is still bronze, silver, gold, and platinum lifetime achievements to go for. When I compete with the adults, I feel like I’m around my friends, and that’s what they are! We are all in this together and we are just there to have fun and play the game with our best friend. LK: Who would you like to thank for your success with Misty? What advice have you received that has stuck with you throughout your training? AL: Wow, that’s a lot of names! Well, here goes! First, you, Linda Knowles (Misty’s Grandma); Patty Drom (owner of Dallas Dog Sports and Misty’s teacher); Diane Carson (teacher and friend); Lizzie Carson (best friend and cheerleader for Misty); Leslie and Pepe (gave me my last pairs Q); Stacy Lehman (mom, the one who started the dream); Jon Lehman (dad, who allowed me to have Misty); David Lehman (brother, best supporter); Jody Faulkner (teacher and friend); Class friends: all the 12" competitors and dogs; Megan (Misty’s birth mom, they still recognize each other!); Terri Schmidt (pre-agility teacher). This list could go on forever and sorry to anyone I didn’t name! I actually do have someone on the list above who has given me some wisdom that I stick by, my mom. She said, “Remember, when your teammate is a dog, anything can happen! Have fun!” D February 08 | Clean Run Linda Knowles, who lives with four Jack Russell Terriers and one Border Collie, owns Gold Medal Dog Training Center in Keller, Texas. After 37 years of training horses, she turned to her dogs upon losing a great horse. Agility has been her passion for the past 11 years. Linda has participated in the USDAA USA World Team 2004, was in the USDAA Top Ten 1999-2004, has 18 JRTCA National Championships in agility and obedience, was a Grand Prix finalist 2002, 2004, and a Steeplechase finalist 2002, 2003, and 2004.
