beautifully, fast and efficient, well enough to earn a spot in the Challenger round. We were incredibly connected on the course, and though we’ve had many good runs since, that one will probably always be my favorite. LB: When did you realize Dunk could be a champion? BK: I knew he had potential the day we began training again after taking time out for confidence-building exercises. Training with Dunk had become really f u n . By t h e beginning of his second year of competition, when he was qualifying fairly regularly i n U S DA A Masters, I knew he would earn his ADCH more quickly than Eve had. That year I focused primarily on Eve because I wanted to finish her Bronze lifetime before moving her to Performance because of her bad hips. I was very surprised to discover © WENDI PENCILLE/HORSEFEATHERS PHOTOGRAPHY in the fall Dunk needed only one more Snooker Q and one more Pairs Q for his ADCH. I focused on getting these before the end of the year and was successful. On the Snooker run, we needed only 37 points. I walked and walked that Snooker course until I was very confident Dunk could run it efficiently. As it turned out, he won the class and got a Super-Q he didn’t need. We got the Pairs leg with Donna Rohaus and Cap at Keystone. LB: Describe your favorite non-agility moment with Dunk. We’ve recently taken a few obedience classes, and Dunk seems to enjoy the oneon-one focus and attention. And he is a great woodchuck hunter. LB: What other dogs do you have? BK: Being at rest with him nearby. I love seeing him watch the world with his golden eyes. LB: Does Dunk do any sport other than agility? BK: Because I have been so very involved with agility for most of Dunk’s life (teaching and running trials in addition to competing and holding down a day job), I had little time to spend with him on other structured activities. His favorite pastime is herding the two female BCs in our household while they are retrieving balls, Frisbees, or bumpers from a pond. Dunk learned to swim by herding another dog that was swimming. BK: My other BC, Eve, just turned 13. She ended up in local BC rescue when her original owners looked into putting her down because she was “gripping” (children, not sheep). She is a very strong-willed dog with a huge personality and a ton of grit. Our early years, especially, were full of confrontation, but she has always enjoyed competing. She has a Bronze ADCH, Bronze LAA and APD in USDAA, a MACH and two PAXs (the Preferred version of the MACH) in AKC, and a CDX and TD as well. But her greatest achievement was undoubtedly surviving the shish-kabob skewer she counter-surfed and had in her stomach for six weeks. She was competing in agility again a couple of months after the vets finally found it and removed it surgically. She was 10 at the time. Our household includes another female BC, Genie, and two Miniature Poodles.
