Step 3 As soon as the dog is offering to jump onto the platform, have the dog remain on the platform for several seconds before releasing. You can do this by praising the dog before giving the treat, by giving a succession of very small treats, or by simply telling the dog to stay. Since you are standing and the platform brings the dog closer to you, most dogs are happy to stay on it. Step 5 Start the next session by putting out the smallest platform the dog has already mastered, and several increasingly smaller platforms. Starting with the largest platform, give the dog the cue and hand gesture to climb up onto it, have the dog remain on the platform several seconds, reward, and encourage the dog to jump off the platform. Move to the next platform and repeat. Continue moving down the line of platforms until you reach a platform that the dog cannot easily jump onto. At this point the dog understands his job is to get all four feet onto the platform and will work hard to do so. Once the dog is balanced on the platform, immediately reward and let the dog jump off. Do not move to a smaller platform until the dog can comfortably get on and stay on this one.
