Methodology: Basic Elements

Dogs have taught us that there are seven basic elements in agility handling:
1. The handler's movement
2. The handler's position in relation to
the dog
3. The handler's eye contact with the dog
4. The direction of the handler's chest
(the "laser pointer")
5. The direction of the handler's feet
6. The handler's arm/hand signals
7. The handler's verbal cues
All OneMind Dogs (OMD) handling
techniques include aspects of these
seven elements. In every OMD "technique" (handling maneuver) we try to
get all of the elements to support the
same message to the dog. For instance,
if you shout Tunnel and point to the
obstacle with your arm, but your movement is toward another direction and

the laser pointer in your chest is facing
another obstacle, you are giving mixed
signals to the dog. Sometimes your
dog guesses right, but many times he
is just frustrated and will choose incorrectly. He has no idea which element he
should follow this time. Often after giving mixed signals to the dog you'll hear
a frustrated handler say, "I said Tunnel,
but my dog was naughty and didn't
obey me." Poor dog, he did try to interpret the handling correctly, but there
were too many conflicting signals, all of
them giving different instructions.
Imagine yourself driving in a strange
city. You are simultaneously listening
to and watching the GPS, looking out
for signs, and concentrating on driving. If the GPS and the traffic signs
conflict, you will eventually turn onto
a wrong road. The same rule applies to
your dog; eventually he will choose the
wrong route since he has too many options of where to go next.
As we look at the seven basic elements
in more detail, we'll use the handling
technique called the forced front cross
as an example, and we'll analyze how
the seven handling elements affect this
particular technique. In a forced front
cross, you do the front cross behind the
jump. The dog's takeoff point is also at
the backside of the jump, from the direction the dog is approaching the jump.
Handler's Movement
Movement is the most important element of handling. Most simply, when
you accelerate, your dog will accelerate; when you decelerate or stop, your
dog will do the same. We refer to this
as "rhythm changes" on the course.
Without any training, the movement
element overrides the other handling
elements. If your other handling elements tell your dog to turn, but your
movement tells him to go straight, the
dog will go straight.
