Step 1
Your dog must already be able to take
a jump without needing to be lured
over it. This means no verbal jump
cue (although verbal encouragement is perfectly fine!) and no hand
waving or luring of any kind! You
want the jump to be a magnet, drawing your dog forward to it, because
of the promise of a great reward.
You can use food or a toy for this
game. Make sure that your dog
really wants what you've got and
is willing to work you to get what
you've got! Don't be afraid to be
creative and silly.
In Figure 1, you'll see that I'm
clicking when the dog has committed to the obstacle. I'm not waiting for my dog to jump to click.
What I am reinforcing here is not
the jumping effort itself, but my
dog's commitment to the jumping
effort. If I click too early, my dog
may stop before taking the jump,
so I'll have to be later with my click
the next time. If I click too late,

I'm not really reinforcing the commitment, which is what we need to
strengthen before starting to do
rear crosses.
You'll notice also in Figure 1 that I
have positioned myself appropriately: if I am on my dog's left, I
expect him to turn to the left to
come back to me for his reward
because that's where the reward
is; if I am on my dog's right, I expect him to turn to the right.
According to the principles of operant conditioning, the behavior
that occurs closest to your click or
verbal marker gets reinforced the
most. However, everything that
happens between your click and
the delivery of the reward also
gets reinforced. This works out
perfectly for our purposes. If we
click just as the dog is committing
and he then takes the obstacle,
having already committed to it, we
reinforce his commitment to take
the obstacle and the taking of the
obstacle itself!

Being able to complete a
side change from behind
your dog is just as
important as being able
to complete a side change
while ahead of your dog.
Just because you can beat
your dog to a location on
course doesn't always
mean that you should.
