Behavior is modifiable, broken relationships much less so. A message of doom
and gloom, one wrought with "never" and "always," sold to new puppy parents
should be replaced with this one:
No living being values anything above their own freedom. You want your
dog to think you're important? Be his safe place. Meet his needs. Connect.
Know you will make mistakes and nothing is broken as long as that connection remains.

Remember the reason
why you have a dog in the
ﬁrst place: for companionship and fun. If you keep
in mind that engaging
with your buddy is what
agility and training are
all about, you will put more into your training sessions and,
as a result, you will enjoy the interaction more. This in turn
means your dog will delight in the experience, which gives
him a reason to try his absolute hardest for you. Too often,
people get caught up in just getting through the sequence or
drill without stopping to remember it's important to reward
your dog for the job he is working hard at. So next time when
that threadle you have been struggling with ﬁnally goes right,
or your dog has stuck that 2-on/2-off contact... stop! and tell
your dog he is right with a great game of tug. D
