Sometimes instead of doing the 180, reward your
dog for driving over the first jump.

should not check in with you. If your
dog is tentative or head-checking,
move the jumps more gradually!
While you're adding difficulty, be sure
to also intermittently reward jump #1
to keep your dog powering hard off
the line as shown in Figure 8a.
Note: Do not be afraid to add difficulty. It is no big deal if your dog fails;
in fact, I expect it when I am training
a new skill. If I am not working to
failure, then I am not progressing the
skill enough. The key is to keep your
intensity up and try again. If, however, your dogs fails several times
successively, then move the jumps
back to where he was successful
previously. This time move the jumps
apart in smaller increments.

As you add difficulty to the 180 drill, it's important to
balance your training by sometimes cueing your dog
to come through the gap between the jumps using a
threadle cue, a front cross, etc.

a long enough send. Alternatively, you
can backchain the behavior. You do
this by starting your dog behind #2, letting him power forward over that jump
and rewarding that a couple times.
Then bring him behind #1 and see
if he'll take both jumps. Having just
been rewarded for taking #2 should
help him look for the jump as he goes
through the first set of uprights.

my dog to come off the next jump
in the 180 and come in between
the gap, I will need to use a verbal,
front cross, or threadle-a cue that
clearly indicates to the dog that he
should not continue to the next obstacle on his path.
