Repeat this process of tossing cookies back and forth about 10 times. In
the ring: • Don’t leave your dog on a lead-out. Practice running and
angled starts to keep the connection with your dog as you begin the
course. • Know your dog’s mental and physical limits. Don’t ask for
more than he is capable of giving you. • Ask for less than you think you
can get so that you can leave the ring while you are successful. That might
mean taking the first jump, praising while leaving the ring, and then
giving your dog a jackpot. • Increase your dog’s confidence level
with obstacle performance. Work on positive training methods to help him
feel comfortable on any obstacle that he avoids or simply tolerates. You
want him to think that each obstacle is a “piece of cake.” • If your
dog gets the zoomies or becomes highly distracted during a run, call him
back and then ask for something easy that he can do well, such as a sit, a
down, or a hand touch. Verbally praise your dog, ask to be excused, leave
the ring, and jackpot. You are rewarding the last behavior your dog did,
not getting the zoomies or being distracted. • Remember, all ring
experiences need to be positive. You need to work on lightening up your
attitude and stress levels. Your dog is looking to you for reassurance. Do
your part as team leader by being calm, cool, and collected. A b o v e all,
remember that agility is just a game; have fun with your friend! ©
MATTALLISONPHOTOGRAPHY.COM Once your dog understands his job and is
comfortable in a show setting, you need to develop competition trust. This
means learning to read your dog. I use the term “settling at the point of
stress” in my seminars, which means “Don’t push your dog when he is
telling you he is worried.” If you don’t receive and act upon the
message your dog is conveying to you, then you are effectively telling him
his concerns don’t matter. When this happens, your dog begins to lose
trust in you as a fair and consistent leader. When your dog offers a
stress response, stop where you are, even if you are the next dog on the
line. Settle your dog at that point—if you’ve led out, return to him.
Ask for a simple behavior: a sit with eye contact, a high five, and so
on. Smile at your dog, tell him he is good, release him from that
position, and remove yourself and your dog to a place where your dog feels
completely comfortable and focused again and engage him in play. When you
do this, you’re telling the dog, “I hear you, and I’ll take care of
you.” By settling him at the stress threshold, you’re helping him to
develop coping skills by building the confidence he needs to work through
stress March 07 | Clean Run without inundating him. You reward your dog for
settling recovering at the point of stress by reinforcing his offering you
a simple behavior. If you don’t ask your dog to settle at the point of
stress before retreating, the behavior chain you are creating is one that
rewards stress response versus recovery. If your dog is under so much
stress that he will not settle and offer you a very simple behavior,
chances are good you took him well past his initial stress threshold. So
don’t create more stress by forcing the behavior. Recognize your mistake
and retreat. Make a mental note to make better observations about his
stress triggers and responses. People often ask me, “If I always retreat
with my dog, how will I ever get past the stress triggers?” What we are
attempting to create with this approach is a bridge of focus back to the
handler following a trigger versus a bridge to a stress response. With
consistency, the dog develops a behavior chain that includes confidence
building, coping skills, and handler focus following any trigger. Over
time this will allow you to work your dog through stress instead of always
retreating. 13 Warning : Unknown : The session id contains invalid characters, valid
