MATTALLISONPHOTOGRAPHY.COM Be Compassionate If your dog is physically
injured or isn’t feeling well, provide your dog with the necessary
attention to allow him to heal and rest. Don’t train or compete with a
sick or injured dog. If your dog is sensitive to heat or cold, then train
and compete in conditions that don’t stress your dog. My dogs are
sensitive to the heat and humidity, so in the summer we play in the early
morning and in the evening. I even scratch or forfeit at a trial if the
temperature is too high. I don’t run my dogs in mud, in moderate and
heavy rains, or during thunderstorms. Enforce the Criteria Anything that
does not meet your criteria must be corrected, period! Rewarding incorrect
performance is walking down the path of disaster. If you let your dog creep
on the start line, or perhaps allow him to bolt from the start line after
you put him in a down-stay, you’re not enforcing your criteria. The lack
of enforcement also makes you inconsistent. Inconsistency means the dog is
getting to make the decisions—he is becoming the captain of the team,
and you the very unhappy teammate. Criteria must be enforced during
training/playing and must be enforced in competition. That’s
right—after you’ve paid your entry fees and spent time and effort
going to the trial, you must correct your dog’s incorrect behavior in
the competition ring. Not correcting an error in the competition ring can
lead to a dog that is “trial wise.” The dog quickly realizes that, at
the trial, the handler might take a chance and not correct an error while
trying to save a qualifying run. After a short time, the handler will be
the captain of the team in practice, but the dog will assume the role of
captain at a trial. If this should occur, it will take many trials with
corrective action for the handler to regain the role of captain. If the
team focuses on getting the performance correct during training/playing
and at the trial, the Q will take care of itself. Provide Praise Providing
praise is how we tell our dogs that they got, or are getting, the game
right. There are many forms and levels of praise. I’ve encountered only
one dog so far that was not food- or toy-motivated, but this dog responded
remarkably to a high-pitched voice from the handler. Sometimes a sensitive
dog finds a loud high-pitched voice to be scary, so you have to find what
type of praise works for your dog. I knew a Sheltie that would work for
lettuce. No chicken, beef, or toys for this dog; he wanted lettuce!
Delivering praise, or positive reinforcement, can be an art in itself. It
can be provided verbally in the competition ring and by providing treats,
toys, and verbal praise while training/playing. Again, as the captain of
the team, it’s your responsibility to discover what praise you need to
provide to reinforce the desired performance. Finally In the years that I
have been training and teaching agility I have made mistakes in all seven
areas. I’m even amazed that Percy still wants to play with me after all
the mistakes I’ve made with him. I like to tell my classes: If you learn
from the stories of my mistakes, you’ll be brilliant people. With Indigo,
my second Cardigan Welsh Corgi, I reinforced my position as captain of the
team from the beginning. I am amazed how much easier Indigo has been to
train, and how much faster he has learned the behaviors I’ve taught him.

agility for over five years and has competed in both the AKC and NADAC. He
has trained two of his own dogs both Cardigan Welsh Corgis and he has been
