Herbal Medicine Herbal medicine is the use of plants, plant parts, seeds, and occasionally other substances (insects, shells, and so on) to aid in healing. Often the herbs are taken orally in liquid tinctures, capsules/pills, or granules but they can sometimes also be used topically. There are many herbal traditions and they vary greatly in the plants used for treatment and the dosages of herbs. The various traditions include but are not limited to Chinese herbal therapy, Western herbal therapy, Native American herbal therapy, and Ayurveda (Indian herbal therapy). If you choose to use herbs for your canine athlete it is very important to work with a knowledgeable herbalist because herbs are not all harmless. The belief that because it is natural it cannot hurt can get you into a lot of trouble. Herbs have the ability to alter the dosages of blood pressure and heart medications. Toxicities and overdoses are possible with herbal therapies. Sometimes herbs get a bad reputation for not working. This usually occurs when owners choose herbs for their dogs without consulting an herbalist. The herbs are often blamed for not working, but in reality the wrong herb was chosen for the condition or the dosage was not appropriate. It is also important to know that all herbal products are not created equal and there is not any government oversight in herbal medicine manufacture. This is definitely a situation where the buyer should beware. Herbal medicine can stand alone or be a great adjunct to Western care. Herbs can be beneficial in improving digestion and intestinal health, which in turn supports the health of the rest of the body. Herbal medicine has applications for acute injuries but its strength probably lies with treating chronic medical conditions. Herbs can help lower the needed doses of Western pharmaceuticals. Herbs can also aid in pain management for arthritis and help in managing behavioral disorders. It is important to stress that there is not any one methodology that works for all patients and each practitioner has a different set of skills. Homeopathy Homeopathy is a therapy that works on the premise of the law of similars or “like cures like.” Microdoses of various substances are used to stimulate the body’s natural healing ability. Sometimes when a patient is under homeopathic care, new symptoms may emerge. This is considered a positive sign in the homeopathic healing progression. Homeopathic remedies are formulated into tiny sugar pellets with the specific remedy coated on the outside of the pellet. The pellets are given orally, usually under the tongue. The oils on your skin can deactivate the remedies so it is best to avoid touching the pellets with your fingers if possible. The pellets come in different concentrations, so be aware of what specific strength you have been instructed to use. Homeopathy can work well in conjunction with other modalities. There are some homeopathic practitioners, however, who feel strongly that homeopathy should be used exclusively and not concurrently with any other therapies. This is a point to be discussed with the individual practitioner. Homeopathy can easily be administered at home or at trials. Homeopathy is best used under the direction of a qualified practitioner. So how does homeopathy work for canine athletes? There are some great remedies for musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis, muscle soreness, and generalized inflammation. Homeopathy can also be used to help balance emotional issues such as anxiety or fear. A qualified practitioner can potentially help with a host of other medical conditions including skin disease, gastrointestinal disease, and viral infections. Physical therapy and massage Physical therapy and massage are both wonderful therapies for musculoskeletal problems and arguably necessary for all athletes at some point in their career. Both therapies can help with maintaining good muscle condition and also with recovery when there is an injury. These therapies have been written about in other articles and I will not cover them in detail here. These two therapies are often used to help maintain canine athletes in prime condition. There is not any one therapy or combination of therapies that will guarantee recovery for your companion. What works well for one dog might not work for yours. For example, if your dog has back pain, acupuncture and massage may be a good combination of therapies; but chiropractic and physical therapy may do the trick, too. Or if your dog falls off the dogwalk during a trial, what to do? A dose of a homeopathic remedy and a visit to a practitioner at the trial (either physical therapy, massage, or chiropractic) may be all your dog needs, or maybe 44 you decide to follow up with your regular veterinarian for some pain medication and visit your chiropractic provider. There are so many choices, but with experience you will learn how to navigate all the options. Finding a Qualified Practitioner Taking the time to find a qualified practitioner is worth the effort. Remember you are looking for a long-term relationship with a practitioner who can help keep your canine athlete in top form. A personal referral from a friend or colleague is a great starting point. There are also professional organizations that list member practitioners by location (see sidebar). Each type of therapy has its strengths and weaknesses. The most important part of using alternative therapies is finding a practitioner you can trust and with whom you can communicate. Practitioners should be willing to educate you about the therapies that they use and to answer all your questions. Communicating your needs and expectations at the start of therapy can help avoid disappointment or Clean Run | March 08
