Course Diagram Keys Before calculating it I was sure, absolutely sure, that exhibitors getting to the line late, or being ready to start late, were a factor contributing to classes running over time. At about the same time I started noticing that there was a direct relationship between a gate steward being tense and people having more trouble with the course—not so much in excellent B, where everyone pretty much goes on autopilot until they’re running, but in Novice and Open where people are new and nervous. Even if they snap at the gate steward or run up to the gate late and out of breath and expect you to fit them in right now, it’s probably because they’re so frazzled and inexperienced that they’ve lost their cool. I’m a compulsively punctual person, so it was an eye-opener to me to realize that what really mattered, in terms of making things run smoothly and on time, was not getting everyone to listen to me, but getting everyone to feel relaxed and comfortable going into the ring. Again, I’m sorry that you were insulted by my editorial; I just wanted to remind us all that exhibitors aren’t barbarians, and if we all relax, things go a lot more smoothly.
