Comparing the Derrett and Mecklenburg Handling Systems By the Clean Run Staff The Basic Cues and an Overview What is a system? Webster’s dictionary defines a system as “an assemblage or combination of things or parts forming a complex or unitary whole.” A handling system is a form of communication between you and your dog. It consists of all the cues that you use to show your dog where he should go on courses or in sequences. The purpose of having a system is to provide consistent communication to maximize your dog’s performance. A dog that can react to his cues immediately will be confident, quick, and efficient. Why do you need a system? Having a system will help you better understand: — What a cue is — What handling cues are available — What the dog’s response to the cues should be — When, where, why, and how to apply the cues — Which cues shouldn’t be used because they are inconsistent within the system — Which cues the dog may be inadvertently following The two main systems used in the U.S. and Canada right now originated with Greg Derrett (called the Derrett System) and Linda Mecklenburg (called the Awesome Paws Handling System or APHS). The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast the cues of the two systems for informational purposes. We are not going to try to prove that one system is “correct” or that one system is better. Both systems are proven and both work as a consistent handling system. This article series is designed to help you understand what the differences and similarities are so you can make informed decisions about which system might be better for you or your students. The series is also not designed to fully educate you on the intricacies of each system. There are resources available for both handling systems that are intended for this purpose. Both systems strive to have the handler out in front of the dog to provide better information and to build motivation by having the dog chase the handler. Both systems have the goal of getting the dog around the course cleanly and quickly, and with the fewest strides possible. March 09 | Clean Run Note: For the purpose of this series, when referring to obstacles, we will be using jumps since handling cues have the most influence on a dog’s jumping trajectory. APHS also refers to other turning obstacles such as tires, straight tunnels, and chutes, but to be consistent in comparing the two systems, we will refer to jumps. Cues The cues available in each system are shown below: Derrett • Positional cues (relative to equipment) • Acceleration/deceleration • Arm changes • Shoulders (blind-cross body line or BCBL) • Legs • Verbal cues • Eye contact Mecklenburg • Motion • Shoulders (direction the handler is facing) • Location (relative to dog and equipment) • Eye contact • Hands/arms • Verbal cues Derrett System Overview The basic principle of the system is that the dog understands acceleration/deceleration and the dog’s primary goal is to drive to the handler’s reinforcement zone as fast as possible. This drive is primarily achieved by the handler rewarding the dog from hand (treats and tug). The end result is: When I run, you run. When I stop, you stop. If I’m standing still, run to me and stop. Handler deceleration or stationary handler position should cue collection for the dog. The primary cues in the Derrett System are positional cues and arm changes. The main handling maneuvers of the Derrett System are: front crosses, rear crosses, lead-out pivots, serpentines, threadle arms (formerly referred to as false turns), and shoulder pulls. The system is based on a series of rules that the handler must follow to provide a consistent picture to the dog. 61
