If your dog engages in a game of tug with other dogs you can easily transfer the tugging to you. If your dog will not tug with you alone, get in on the game with more than one dog tugging. A submissive dog is often more confident if another dog is tugging with you too. It won’t take long before he is tugging with you on his own. I have found tugging to be very bonding and it can really keep a dog connected to you. However, I do not recommend tugging for reactive dogs. For dogs that become overstimulated or reactive, tugging might put those dogs over the top into prey drive and they could possibly aggress. In addition to teaching a tug, you will want to teach a release command so you are always the one to end the game. Teaching a release is easily done with a trade of another toy or a piece of food. Give your verbal release cue and present the food or toy trade. With repetition the verbal cue becomes associated with the release of the toy and the trade is no longer needed. However, I recommend rewarding the release periodically so you never lose the strength of the verbal cue.
Games to Entice Play
It is possible that your dog won’t engage in play with other dogs. That does not mean your dog does not like to play. All dogs like to play; they just may not care to play with other dogs. For the dog that you have been unable to observe playing, you need to experiment and be creative. But if you are determined, you can succeed. Here are some play-enticing games to try: „ Catch: Throw the ball or toy directly to your dog. This game should not be about retrieving because you want close contact with your dog during play. „ Get your paw: This game is usually best incorporated into a game of tug. While the dog is tugging, they are also dodging your hand grabbing at a paw. This game builds dexterity and adds challenge. „ Where’s my dog? Use a sheet or pillow case and gently toss it over your dog and then help him escape. This game can also be a catalyst for tugging. As an added bonus, this
