Drill 8: Using the Pinwheel
to Work on Other Skills
Once your dog is getting to be awesome at his independent pinwheel,
it's time to balance your training with
some other skills; remember, it's
important to keep your distance and
close skills in balance. There are
endless skills you can do around the
pinwheel configuration, I will mention just a few here.
If your dog is more advanced, he
already may be very proficient at
many of these handling drills, while
young dogs may not be up to some
of this skill work. Work at your dog's
speed, gradually adding in the harder skills as you teach your basics
such as rear crosses, threadles,
and serpentines.
If your dog is ready for the challenge, you can tighten up the pinwheel distance to make drills such
as your threadles and 180-wrap
front crosses more difficult.

Front Cross Drills
Be sure to do all of the drills starting
with the dog on your right as well as
your left.
1. Lead out to 180-wrap position
(about a foot from the jump). Do
a front cross as your dog commits to the jump as shown in
Figure 4a.
2. Once you are successful and your
dog is decelerating nicely, instead
of leading out to decel position,
run into it as in Figure 4b. Make
sure you give your dog plenty of
room to read your decel cue.
3. Send your dog to jump #1 from
inside the pinwheel as shown in
Figure 4c. While your dog drives
out to jump #1, support him with
your inside arm and run to front
cross position at #3. Throwing
the reinforcer after jump #1 or
jump #2 while you send your
dog and go is a great way to reinforce your dog for committing

to jumps. In fact, it is one of the
best ways to reinforce the skills
you want. When I see that my
dog has intent to take a jump
in a sequence, I will support it
with my connection and body
language, but I will leave to go to
my next handling position.
4. Do the drill shown in Figure 4d.
Throw the reinforcer to reward
your dog for not pulling off that
obstacle while you get ahead.
You can practice these send and
gos with front crosses from anywhere on the pinwheel; for example,
you can start at the middle jump,
send your dog to the third jump, and
then front cross at the first jump.
