Clean Run - March 2020 - 30

I wish more competitors would adopt
some of the Bright Sider's general
habits, but there is one pitfall to avoid.
Some of these competitors are so married to seeing only the good things
about their dog and the performance
that they do not put enough effort
into exploring the hows and whys of
what did go wrong. They seem to worry that it will ruin their day if they do.
So bright siders often have the same
issues endlessly because they think
looking at what went wrong is being
negative.
Looking at what did not go right is
smart and can actually feel enlightening when you do not attach feelings to
it. Think "all-encompassing big picture"
and stay well rounded with your feedback to yourself.
The Results Chameleon
I used to be this competitor, big time.
It took me some time to realize what
was happening. I was already utilizing
many skills I had developed to be the
competitor I wanted to be, but one

day I noticed something, and I knew it
was frequently happening. I had a run
and felt good about it, or not. Then I
would go look at the results. I noticed
that the results could change how I
felt about the performance! I could
have deemed my run mediocre, and
if I won the class, I instantly felt better about the run. It went the other
way too. I'd feel super good about a
run, look at the results, and then feel
not-so-good because other teams did
better than I did.
Now I do not look at the results until I
have completed my personal evaluation of the facts of my run and my own
assessment of my thoughts, beliefs,
and feelings about my run. Then I go
look at the results and practice not
being affected by them. I love not having the rest of my day wrapped up in
those results!
The Fisher
These competitors go fishing endlessly
for information about their runs. They
seem confused about every aspect of

it. I'm not talking about the normal
feedback inquiries that we all seek
from time to time. They also fish for
handling tips and training solutions,
way more than the average person. I
have students who seek advice from
competitors that do not know as much
as they do, especially when it comes to
their own dog and their own training
knowledge.
These fishers lack confidence; they are
not secure in what they know, so they
crave endless input. This is a disadvantage because it keeps them confused,
and they will take advice from the
wrong sources. Successful competitors have developed a trusted strategy
for identifying weak areas and have a
trusted way of dealing with them.
The Oblivious
These competitors seem to miss the
boat a lot. They also miss the memo on
where to park, when the walk-through
is, and what to do when their dog
misses a contact. They did not notice
they were playing a very rowdy game

Stop spending hard-earned
dollars and precious time and
still not qualifying because
of missed contacts! Improve
the speed, accuracy, and
independence of your contacts.
