him know which behaviors are not okay. occasionally, I correct my dog if he does something I don’t like. Let’s look at two occasions when I would use a correction. I might correct my dog if he barks at other dogs or continues sniffing when I call him. For barking, I would put my dog away or turn him away from the other dogs, and not let him participate while misbehaving. When he stops the undesirable behavior, he gets another opportunity to manage the situation. For sniffing, I would interrupt the sniffing by going to get the dog, taking him gently by his collar, and then trying another recall so I can reward the correct response. If the correction is to help the dog in his development, it’s crucial that you remain calm and never correct your dog when you are irritated or angry. Here are a few corrections specific to agility training. Please note the problem solving I’m discussing here presumes the dog is healthy and also that he understands the system of handling you use. When my dog knocks a bar, I stop as quickly as possible. I indicate the error by giving the dog a “boring break.” The boring break might just be a pause while I reset the bar, or (for dogs that get all revved up) I might put the dog in a down-stay so he can clear his head and understand the boring break I’m after. If I’m training start lines and the dog breaks his position, I quietly go to meet him, take his collar, and calmly lead him back to his starting point. We then try again, and I feel certain the dog will be successful this time around. To clearly and calmly correct unwanted behaviors and also directly give the dog another chance and then trust that he’ll get it right, is elementary in creating a positive relationship with my dog. Note that I don’t use corrections when training new behaviors. your dog. When playing with my dog, I want to make him feel crazy and go a bit nuts, partly because I enjoy that and partly because it’s important for training. Playing together is also good training for improving our body language; my dog and I get to practice moving fast and reacting quickly. By playing with your dog you will get to see what kind of sounds and movements your dog reacts to automatically, and the dog in turn can learn to react to sounds and movements that he perhaps didn’t react to when you began. These sounds and movements become conditioned signals that can then trigger and affect your dog when training. Use your voice and your body language to create an exciting and captivating game. I mainly act in two ways, exciting or secretive. Try to use your voice in a mysterious and excited fashion and condition certain words, sounds, or tones of voice. Work with your posture and movements in the same way. You can, for example, crouch down low and slowly move toward the dog, whispering words or phrases; then make a sudden movement and dash toward him, to begin playing chase. Play with and tease your dog, playfully pushing and annoying him a bit—that gets most dogs going. The game can go on while you repeat your slow moves, chasing your dog yet again. Vary this by turning and letting the dog chase you. Make sure to get involved in the game and feel it; you should feel energized and excited by the game too. Don’t play with your dog because you should—play because it’s fun! Next introduce toys into the mix to play tug or chase games with. This part of playing is important so you can use play as a reward when training. Far too often you see people merely delivering the toy to the dog without putting any excitement or joy into it. This often leads to two different reactions— either the dog is utterly uninterested in his supposed reward, or he runs away and plays by himself, thus the handler misses out on the entire interaction. My goal is to be as engaged when rewarding with a toy as I am when we’re playing at home, without a toy. If you want to teach your dog to enjoy toys, or if you want to develop your toy play with your dog, begin with the feeling and mood you created when playing without the toy. Play with a toy the Power of Play Playing is important in many ways, and lays the foundation for both your relationship and training. I play a lot with my dogs, with and without toys and also with food. Playing with toys might be the first thing that comes to mind, but playing without toys is almost more important. In many ways, that’s the base of everything else. You need to invest yourself in the game and add excitement and a true interaction with Clean Run | April 09
