Rachel Sanders has competed in agility since 1994, and with her Border Collie, Whist, and JRT, Trump, has won three USDAA Grand Prix of Dog Agility Championships and a Steeplechase Championship. Rachel and her BC Fable represented the U.S. at the 2008 IFCS World Championships in Belgium where they earned a silver medal. If I lead out to the takeoff side of #2, immediately after releasing the dog to the chute I can start moving to the landing side of #2. As the dog exits the chute, I can start my rotation for a front cross before the A-frame (moving front cross).

If I lead out to the landing side of #2, I might expect the dog to take the chute because the obstacle is between the dog’s starting point and me. The dog needs to have a good understanding of the criteria and an understanding of his verbal tunnel cue (lead-out push).

If I lead out to the landing side of #2 but support the chute with my forward cue of an inside arm (here my left arm, my shoulders facing forward), my location would cue the turn from the exit of the chute (lead-out pivot).

If the dog does not have that lead-out skill, I can lead out to just past the opening of the chute and move laterally to #2, immediately after releasing the dog.

When deciding on a handling choice for any course, I consider the skill level and speed of the dog, and the physical ability of the handler. Then I decide how to apply physical and verbal cues to the course. Although my handling of my dogs doesn’t vary greatly, there are differences based on my dogs’ strengths and weaknesses. Obstacles #1-#3 I prefer to have the dog on my right as he approaches the A-frame. Depending on the dog’s experience and speed, I can lead out to three slightly different locations, depending on how much support the dog needs at the chute, as

illustrated in Figures 6a through 6c. Notice that in each scenario, my location is identical as the dog approaches the takeoff point for #2. If the dog does not have that lead-out skill, I can lead out to just past the opening of the chute and move laterally to #2, immediately after releasing the dog as shown in Figure 7. Although I can lead out farther I do not want to cue that much forward motion out of the chute and want the dog to see my lateral motion as he enters the chute to indicate a right turn afterward. I can then do a rear cross at the #3 A-frame.
