This challenging Excellent Standard course provides many opportunities for layering; that is, directing the dog to the correct obstacle when another obstacle is located between us. Obstacles #1-#12 To begin, I position the dog at the start as shown in Figure 11 and lead out to handler position H1. I release him to the chute while pressing toward path marker P (halfway between the dog’s current position and the chute entrance). Before he exits, I give my Come command. As he exits, I turn parallel to the path I want the dog to take, give my command for #2, and move toward position H2. To establish a good line to #3, I must reach position H2 before the dog commits to #2. As the dog commits to #2, I give my command for the A-frame. As he completes it, I give my Come command, turn parallel to the path I want him to take (H3), and follow with the command for #4. As he commits to #4, I give my command for #5 and run to position H4. As he commits to #5, I give my Come command, and do a front cross. I handle #6, through #8 off my left, decelerating between #7 and #8. As the dog commits to #8, I give my Come command and turn parallel to the path I want him to take, layering jump #2 (H5). I continue with #9 through #11 off my left, decelerating between #10 and #11. As he commits to #11, I give my Come command, turn parallel to the path I want him to take (H6), and follow with my command for the table. Obstacles #13-#20 With the dog in position on the table, I lead out to position H1 (I want to be past the A-frame when he commits to #13 to clearly cue the turn to #14) as shown in Figure 12. When the table count is complete, I give my Come command, followed by the command for jump #13. As he commits to #13, I give my Come command, turn parallel to the path I want the dog to take (H2), and follow with my command for the weave poles. As he exits the poles, I give my command for the #15 tunnel (H3) as I press toward path marker P1. When he exits the tunnel, I give my command for #16 (H4) while pressing toward P2. When he exits #16, I give my Out command and cue an outward flip to #17 (H5). As he commits to #17, I give my Come command, turn parallel to the path I want him to take (H6), and give my command for the dogwalk. When he reaches his downside position, I give my Come command and turn parallel to the path I want him to take (H7). I follow with the command for the tunnel. Just before he exits, I give my Come command and do a front cross. I finish with #20 off my right (H8). D
