Incorporate The Fan into The Vortex to really
encourage bending with each parallel-to-perpendicular
jumping effort.
The Vortex
only reward the dog if he jumps
cleanly. You can substitute a tire
for jump #2 to make this exercise
even more challenging, but you
may have to spread out the jumps
on the side since it is usually more
difficult for dogs to bend through
a tire than over a bar jump.
Games That
Take a Bit More Space
If you have a bit more space, here
are two more exercises that hit on
the same jumping effort.
The Vortex
Start with the first setup in Figure 4
and then try the full exercise:
you'll do each jump once followed
by two wraps around the jump before sending your dog back into
the tunnel.
The Fan to the Vortex
If you want to challenge your dog
even more, you can incorporate
The Fan into The Vortex as shown
in Figure 5.
Some Words of Caution
Always make sure the game is fun
for your dog; remember, this type
of jumping effort is challenging,
and more so for some dogs than
others. If your dog is not particularly bendy, you may need to expand the setups shown here to accommodate your dog. I want these
puzzles to be challenging but not
impossible.
You may find that your dog is more
coordinated or skilled working in
one direction than the other. You
may want to help "even things out"
by stepping up your stretching and
conditioning program and paying
more attention to your dog's flexibility and coordination in both directions, with a goal toward equalizing sides.
Also pay attention to what your
dog is telling you about the difficulty of each challenge, and make
sure to treat these challenges similarly to other canine conditioning exercises. These take skill and
strength since we've taken most of
the speed out of them. If your dog
does not have the coordination or
musculature to support this activity, you may make your dog sore.
