For me agility is all about setting the dog's
path. The sequence of obstacles set by the
judge defines where the path should lead,
and setting the path for my dog through
these obstacles is my job as a handler.
I want to plan my handling to set the
line through as many obstacles as possible, generally three to five depending on
course complexity, so my dog will know
as early as possible where he is going
next, and where turns are coming up, so
he can plan his striding accordingly.
In this series of articles we will we will
examine some sequences that you may
see in competition and learn how to
visualize your dog's path and possible
options based on the sequence itself,
your handling skill set, and your dog's
training and strengths.
Masters/Excellent Sequence
In the Masters/ Excellent level sequence
in Figure 1, a generalized dog path is depicted in red. To begin the opening sequence, jump #1 to the tunnel #4, the dog
should be set at an angle so that he takes
jumps #1-#2 on a slice in a straight line.
If you square up the dog to jump #1, you
create a much longer path as depicted by
the orange lines in this diagram. It is acceptable for the dog to take jump #2 in

extension since he will be headed toward
jump #3 on this path. The handler may
use motion to cue the dog to take jump
#3 and head directly into the tunnel.
Showing the dog jump #3 at an angle,
and allowing him to slice it in extension,
will give the dog a fast, efficient line to
the tunnel at #4.
The dog's path in the next section of the
course is shown in Figure 2. The first
problem to solve is to create an efficient
line between jumps #5 and #6. Many
handlers would elect to slide past jump
#5 and perform a front cross. If this front

cross is late or poorly positioned the
dog will go wide and have a very inefficient path as shown by the orange lines
between jumps #5 and #6. In this case,
squaring up the dog to jump #5 (red
path) will help to straighten his line to #6.
This could be accomplished by supporting the dog's line from the tunnel to jump
#5, then perhaps doing a rear cross, blind
cross, or a well-timed front cross closer
to jump #6. Which to do is dependent
on how much support your dog needs
to take jump #5 collected and turning,
rather than in extension on a slice.
