I like to see a consistency of judging on every competitor.
I want a judge to judge dog #1 the same as dog #300 and
all those in between. The best judges are prepared and
have thought out their paths before the first dog runs,
so they know they have the best view. They will walk the
same path consistently for each competitor.
In our seminars, Lee and I are often asked, "What do you
do if you are ten dogs in and realise you can't see properly?" Do you judge everyone the same, or do you make
mistakes for the whole class? Do you restart the class
and change the course to be fair to everyone? There is
no correct answer for this, so #DontBeThatJudge and
make sure you design the course where you have the
#BestViewInTheHouse for every competitor.
In my opinion, the best judges appear to have time on
their hands when making their chosen judging position. A
pet hate of mine is seeing a judge rushing or even running
around the course. On occasion, this might be justified, but
a judge who is rushed or having to run is far more likely to
make mistakes, will arrive at their position inconsistently,
and will not be as focused on the dog as they are navigating
running around the course. Competitors often complain
about this distraction as well, justified or not.
As in most sports, I believe a judge and official not noticed
or talked about is the one doing the best job!
We all learn from our mistakes, and I think this is very true
when it comes to the judge's path. Self-analysis is by far
the best way to make improvements, and I believe judges
should consider their performances in terms of their
chosen path after every course.

* Was the distance achievable throughout my day?
* What could I change in my design to help me
