With only about 25% of the area of a typical agility course, my training center's inclement weather practice
space is under a 60ft. x 40ft. pavilion. Using a teeter, six poles, 4ft. jumps and some 10ft. and 15ft. tunnels,
we can cultivate our dogs' basic agility skills including contact performance, weaving, and jumping, as well
as work on our handling abilities. Here I will share some of our equipment setups and drills.
An alternative and more advanced course requirement
is found in what is sometimes
termed an "inverted pinwheel"
where some or all of the components are taken from a backside,
or landing-side, approach. It will
be apparent that the handling
guidelines described above
cannot be used to get through
this pinwheel modification. The
handler must consider more sophisticated course advancement
options, such as which wing of a
jump should the dog be directed
around to encourage collection or
extension, and on which side of
the handler should the dog be positioned to begin the sequence.
In the second setup for this
month, shown in Figure 4-6, we

When it is recognized that this
grouping is basically a pinwheel
absent the central obstacle, the
handler is able to guide his partner through the pattern utilizing
similar techniques. Supporting

took our pinwheel skills and applied them to jumps arranged in
what is known as a 270. The designation comes from the fact that
the two obstacles are arranged
at a 90-degree angle to each
other, with the course requiring
the dog to follow a 270-degree
path around their outside arc. A
successful trip through a 270 is
considered an advanced agility
maneuver, and its use in courses
was even excluded by regulation
in some venues early in the history of our sport.

the "invisible" middle hurdle helps
propel the dog outward so that a
good approach to the second part
of the sequence is achievable,
hopefully ensuring a safer conclusion. Another pinwheel similarity
is that it is generally better for the
handler to direct the action from
a position inside the pocket of the
two jumps while executing a post
turn through the sequence. The
handler is cautioned to maintain
good connection and support of
his partner's line, as a post turn
executed too quickly, particularly
with a wider spread 270, might pull
the dog through the space
between the obstacles and into
a refusal call. D
