4 Easy Steps to Getting More Accomplished When You Train
By Sandy Rogers

short on time and money and still want a mach, catch, natch, or adch?
here are some tips for getting more training bang for your buck.
This is a simple four-step process you can use to ensure that your
dog is learning what he needs to be learning each time you train.
By following the steps you will be increasing your dogs’ comprehension of your cues in all scenarios of your sequence and course
work. These steps will keep you on track, addressing exactly what
your dog needs, when he needs it.
What’s Under Your Carpet?
You give a cue and your dog does not do what you had hoped
he would do. What happens next will determine whether or
not he will learn to do that thing you wanted him to do in the
future. If you were on your way to a difficult weave entry five
obstacles down the line when the misunderstanding happened
(such as a wide turn or a missed rear cross cue), chances are
you may sweep that misunderstanding under the carpet to get
down to the “real” business of that nasty pole entry you want
to hit so badly. You will look good when you do it and the class
will marvel, you will be thrilled. Meanwhile your instructor
is pulling her hair out because the cue that got swept under
the carpet on the way to the brilliant weave entry has been an
ongoing issue in the dog’s training program. Maybe you were
even just complaining about blowing a qualifying score at the
trial because of it. What a surprise! The reason the issue is on
going is because it has been swept under the carpet in the past.
The Big Enchilada and the Flavor of the Month
When it comes to cued behaviors all dogs will have a current “flavor-of-the-month” weak link that changes, as well as at least one
“big enchilada,” ongoing, sometimes career-long nemesis. Flavorof-the-month weak links develop when misunderstandings get
swept under the carpet. The big-enchilada issues are often there
42

just because of who the dog is—an element in the training that
was tough for that particular dog, for whatever reason.
Each time your dog misunderstands you and you choose to
sweep it under the carpet by ignoring it and going on, you are
weakening the weak link further. It might clear up eventually
on its own—might, but it won’t be quick. That is the point of
the article. Ignoring misunderstandings is a terribly inefficient
way to train. If it is a big-enchilada issue that you don’t address
each time your dog asks you for help with it, you can count on
it raising its ugly head forever. I see it all the time.
Preventive Measures
Get your head in the game before you get to your training
session. If you drive to where you train, pick a place on your
route to turn to the channel in your brain called “agility.” Give
consideration to both your big-enchilada issue and your current flavor-of-the-month issue.
When you walk a sequence look for places where you can make
an issue of your issues. Remember, dogs do not have to go wrong
in order for learning to happen. You can plan to reward the
dog in the places that have proven difficult for him in the past.
For example, if you have a dog that cuts behind you to take offcourse obstacles, look for places in the sequence where you can
reward him for not doing that. Find the spots where you will be
running very closely past an obstacle with your dog on your opposite side (like a sandwich of dog and obstacle with you in the
middle). Pay the dog at your leg (placement of reward is critical)
even if he was not tempted to cut behind you this time. You are
making an insurance payment for the next time—it’s easy and
free, try it! Each time you pay your dog for staying on the correct
