There are specific vitamins that are necessary for collagen synthesis, but Vitamin C is
the most important because it is involved in linking the amino acids together. Thankfully dogs (unlike humans) make their own Vitamin C, but providing an ample amount
in the whole food form to their diet will be beneficial, too. Foods rich in Vitamin C are
green peppers, red peppers, strawberries, citrus fruits, honeydew melon, broccoli,
Brussel sprouts, kale, papaya, cauliflower, raspberry, parsley, cabbage, blackberries,
spinach, kiwi, watercress, oranges, peppers, cantaloupe, dandelion greens, tomatoes,
sweet potatoes, bananas, and mangos. Anthocyanidin is a bioflavanoid that increases
Vitamin C levels in the cells and is an antioxidant that may protect collagen from inflammation and degeneration by their involvement in linking the fibrils in collagen.
Anthocyanidins are found in cherries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries.
Vitamin B-3 (niacin) enhances collagen production. Foods rich in niacin are chicken
and turkey breast, tuna, salmon, liver, halibut, lamb, venison, and beef
Copper is necessary for collagen metabolism. Foods rich in copper are sesame
seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, soybeans, barley, tempeh,
garbanzo beans, lentils, and lima beans.
Zinc is involved in the production of protein and collagen, so ample supply in the
body is necessary. Foods rich in zinc include chicken, lamb, beans, peanuts, veal
liver, pumpkin and squash seeds, crab, and oysters.
Iron supplementation has been shown in human research to increase Type 1 and
Type 3 collagen. Vitamin C helps absorb iron. Foods rich in iron are red meat, egg
yolks, dark leafy greens, oysters, clams, scallops, turkey or chicken giblets, beans,
lentils, chick peas, soybeans, liver, and artichokes
Silicon helps bind the fibers and is necessary for the structural integrity of the collagen. Foods rich in silicon are brown rice, rice bran, rolled oats, soybeans, alfalfa,
whole grains, bell peppers, beets, leafy green vegetables, pumpkin, carrots, cabbage, cucumber, cherries, apples, oranges, fish, honey, nuts and seeds.
According to some human studies, Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) increase collagen
production in the ligaments and connective tissues and help strengthen them. The
anti-inflammatory properties of Omega 3 fatty acids help protect collagen and connective tissue. Inflammation can degrade collagen which leads to tissue damage
that could be found anywhere in the body.
In addition to food items, there are herbs that support and enhance collagen production and they can be prescribed by your holistic veterinarian. For example, Calendula has anti-inflammatory properties, is antibacterial, and helps produce the
proteins needed for collagen manufacturing. Hawthorn berries are rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins which stabilize and stimulate
production of collagen in the bone and cartilage. Eucommia contains an abundance
of plant collagen and may provide the precursors to collagen formation in the
body. The herb Horsetail is loaded with silica and helps the body to utilize calcium.

weight there is an increase in impact
on the limbs and a higher risk for injury.
Another obvious way to prevent this
injury is to not allow your dog to jump
off high elevated surfaces (e.g., jumping out of an SUV to the ground) and,
whenever possible, keep him from running and jumping on hard surfaces or
slamming into agility equipment (e.g.,
up side of A-frame) or flyball boxes.
Warm-Up, Cool Down
& Strengthening Exercises
Passive range of motion exercises and
proper warm up and cool down before and after workouts, training, and
events will help get the tissues ready
for action and then allow them to normalize and recover from working hard,
preventing fatigue. Running a dog on
“cold” muscles and connective tissues
is not healthy and will increase the
chances of an injury.
There are exercises and tricks you can
teach your dog to help strengthen the
flexors of the carpus and the digits. For
example, when the dog walks over a
semi-firm blow-up mattress, a thick
cushion or foam pad (FitPAWS Balance
Pad, for example), or a trampoline, or
when he walks through sand, the slight
resistance of the surface will force the
flexors of the paws and carpi to work
harder to prevent the paw from sinking
too much. Also, digging and swimming
will force the front paws to flex in order
to move the dirt or water, which is a
good resistance exercise.

Weight
There are some physical things that you can do to prevent carpal hyperextension
and injuries to the carpal bones and the flexor tendons. The first, and most important one, is to make sure that your dog is not overweight. You can go to www.integrativeveterinarian.com/1/archives/08-2011/1.html and watch videos on evaluating your dog’s Body Condition Score. Normally about 60% of the body weight of
the canine is on the front limbs and 40% on the rear. This means that the front legs
will have more forces on them and they are also subject to high speed and pressure
impacts when performing agility or flyball, for example. If your companion is over-
