How do you teach independent performance? Be systematic and work until
your dog does each obstacle (especially the contacts and weaves) with you in
any reasonable location on the course.
Use targets and thrown rewards, if necessary, to help your dog understand

Many handlers think their dogs know
obstacles by name only to discover that
the dog doesn't know which obstacle
to take without physical cues from the
handler. A dog that understands, without any extra help, the names of each
obstacle is likely to have more success
with a slower handler than one that
must always be looking for physical
cues to know which obstacle to take.
Having good obstacle discrimination
skills means the dog can choose the
correct obstacle even when two obstacles are close together. King says, "My
dog must be able to hear my verbal
[cue] and discriminate depending on
what I say. I spend a lot of time on that."
